Everything UK HGV owner-operators need to know about subcontract pay rates, contract arrangements, onboarding, and working with FreightOps. Can't find what you're looking for? Get in touch.

01

Pay & Invoicing

All subcontractors are paid every Friday for work completed in the previous week. Payments are made directly to your business bank account. There are no delays and no chasing required.

Rates are agreed before you start working with us and are based on the type of work, trailer type, distance, and contract arrangement. We are transparent about rates upfront — there are no hidden deductions.

You invoice ProMile directly for all work completed. We will provide you with all the job details and mileage records you need to raise accurate invoices each week.

No. The rate agreed is the rate you receive. FreightOps does not charge subcontractors any platform fees, admin fees, or deductions.

Yes. As a subcontractor providing services through your own limited company or as a sole trader, you are responsible for ensuring your working arrangements are IR35 compliant. We recommend seeking independent advice if you are unsure of your status.

02

Contracts & Work Arrangements

We offer work across multiple trailer and load types — box, curtain sider, supermarket, fridge, and container. We also offer long-term contract arrangements. Tell us what your vehicle is set up for and we will match you to the right work.

We offer AM starts, PM starts, weekend work, and flexible scheduling. Both tramper and shift driver arrangements are available. We structure work around your operation — not the other way around.

A tramper arrangement means the driver stays out with the vehicle for multiple days at a time, typically returning home at weekends. A shift driver arrangement means the driver starts and finishes each day from a fixed location. Both are available through FreightOps — let us know which suits your operation when you apply.

No minimum commitment is required for daily shift work. Long-term contracts will have agreed terms set out before you start. We work with you to find an arrangement that suits your business.

Yes. As an independent owner-operator, you are free to work with other companies alongside FreightOps, unless a specific exclusivity arrangement has been agreed as part of a long-term contract.

We operate across the UK. The specific routes and regions available to you will depend on your location and the work available at the time of onboarding. Our team will discuss this with you during the verification call.

For daily shift work, reasonable notice is appreciated but there is no formal notice period. Long-term contracts will have a notice period set out in the agreement, typically between 2 and 4 weeks.

Onboarding & Getting Started

Most owner-operators are onboarded within 48 hours of submitting a complete application. The main factor is how quickly documents can be verified. Our team will guide you through the process and keep you updated.

The application asks you to upload insurance documents (Goods in Transit, Public Liability, and Employer's Liability), your Goods Vehicle Operator Licence, and any supporting compliance documents. You can also upload your Certificate of Incorporation, VAT certificate, OCRS report, and MOT proof. Multiple files can be uploaded per category.

No. We work with both limited companies and sole traders. You will need to provide your company number if you are registered as a limited company, or your UTR number if you are a sole trader.

OCRS (Operator Compliance Risk Score) is the DVSA's scoring system for goods vehicle operators. We accept operators with a Green or Amber OCRS rating. A Red rating will not automatically disqualify you if you have a clear improvement plan in place — contact us to discuss before applying.

Yes. We ask for your MOT pass rate as part of the application and you can upload supporting proof. A strong MOT pass rate demonstrates that your fleet is well maintained, which is important to us and to the customers we work with.

Our team reviews your application within 24 hours. We will then contact you to arrange a short verification call, confirm your documents, and discuss available work. Once everything is in order, you can start earning.

04

Compliance & Safety Standards

DBS checks are strongly preferred. While not a hard requirement at the point of application, some of the customers we work with require DBS-checked drivers. We will let you know if this applies to specific work.

Forward-facing cameras are expected as standard. In-cab cameras are strongly recommended. Some customer contracts require both. We ask about camera fitment during the application so we can match you to appropriate work.

Yes. All vehicles working with FreightOps must have GPS trackers fitted, and you must be able to share tracker access with us. This is a standard requirement for the customers we work with.

We expect subcontractors to carry out driving assessments for new drivers, provide coupling and uncoupling training, train drivers on bridge strike avoidance, and ensure all drivers are trained on load securing. These are standard safety requirements across the industry.

We ask whether you carry out gate checks or on-road checks for drugs, alcohol, and security as part of the application questionnaire. Operators who carry out regular checks are viewed more favourably, particularly for customer-facing work.

Yes. All drivers are expected to have professional HGV sat navs fitted in their vehicles. Consumer sat navs or phone-based navigation are not considered adequate for commercial HGV operations.

Operations & Support

FreightOps handles all route planning and scheduling. You will receive clear job details — collection point, delivery point, timing, and any relevant instructions — before each shift or job. You do not need to source or plan any of this yourself.

Our support team is available 24/7 to help with any issues that arise during a job. Whether it is a delivery query, a scheduling change, or something unexpected, you can call us directly and we will deal with it.

Yes. All subcontractors must have recovery arrangements in place before starting work with us. This ensures that any breakdown does not leave a load stranded. You will be asked about your recovery provider during the application.

Yes. A maintenance provider must be in place before you start working with us. Regular, documented maintenance is a key part of keeping your OCRS rating healthy and your vehicle compliant.

Fuel cards are offered to subcontractors who demonstrate consistent reliability over time. They are not available from day one but are earned as part of our partnership. Once issued, they can be used at a wide network of fuel stations across the UK.

Yes. We help you stay on top of documentation and compliance requirements relevant to your work with us — including OCRS, MOT records, insurance, and O-Licence. If you have questions about paperwork, records, or regulatory requirements, our team is on hand to assist.

Through our Subcontractor Support programme, we can point you towards trusted providers for insurance, finance, truck hire, trailer hire, fuel cards, parking, and maintenance. If you need help in any of these areas, let us know when you apply and our team will follow up.
